| What is Google AdSense, and, what are Affiliate Ads? |
| I am sure lots of folks would love to build their own web site, but don't because of the cost of having one. I was never motivated to build out my site because I knew I would want an information site for topics I am interested in. I was not interested in some sort of E-commerce type site. In the summer of 2006, I discovered Google ads and other various affiliate programs that offer you monetary compensation for having their ads on your site. What I like about this is that the technology used allows you to either: 1.) hook into their system and they will "sense" your content on the page and will publish current, relevent ads (this page is a perfect example of AdSense) or 2.) allow you to pick relevent ad content that you want posted. The format of this content is usually in the form of banner ads: Example Affiliate Page. In the first case you get paid when people click through to the ad, or in the second, when the clicker links through and actually makes a purchase. I have been pretty successful with the Click Through pay ads, and am still working out how best to make the Commission ads work best. The only downfall with the content "sensing" ads is that you sometimes get ads for topics you do not support or condone, examples of this are Warcraft (you know who they are) sites and Horse Slaughter services. Adsense has a competitor blocking interface where you can put in every domain that you want blocked but it is nearly impossible to keep up with. I used to avoid google ads when visiting websites, but now that I know they pay the web host per click, if I like the web site I will spend a few more minutes there, clicking a few google links, giving them a bit of money to help them pay for their web efforts. In addition, by clicking these ads, I sometimes find an interesting site at the other end:) If you happen to like my site, and you want to make an Amazon, Camping World or Stateline tack purchase (My 3 primary Affiliates), linking to those sites to make that purchase from Stuffnthingz.com will result in Stuffnthingz.com earning a commission, but you must link over to their sites from this site for Stuffnthingz to get the credit. How cool is that? After having spent hundreds of hours building Stuffnthingz.com infrastructure, and then hundreds more posting content, any income earned is very satisfying! According to statistics, gathered from the various affiliate site forums and how to's, a site needs to get 1,000 hits a day in order to earn consistent compensation. I am far from that goal, but still earn a little bit just about every day. Weekends are lightest, with many full weekends not earning anything. When I attended a Search Engine conference this summer (8/05), I spent a couple of lunches at an AdSense topic table and chatted with other webmasters who had implemented AdSense. One person had started an information website in January and had achieved his goal of $4/day (keep in mind this person works full time and his web site is a hobby) less than 6 months later. At these lunches I learned that I should choose my topics carefully to ensure that I had some big paying ads on my site. For Stuffnthingz.com, the big hitter areas are Technology and RVs. I still love my Fun, Horse and Art web areas but have found that they do not earn much. Each affiliate program has administration tools to report your activity and to assist you in building appropriate ad spaces. For instance, In the Google administration tool you can create various channels to keep track of your earnings per URL and per location on the page. |
